INDEPENDENCE NOTE

Humanity Through Grace is an independent editorial project. Simone Weil is discussed as a subject of analysis; no affiliation, endorsement or authorship is implied.

The idea worth taking seriously

For Weil, attention is a disciplined receptivity that stops the self from filling reality with its own projections. To attend is to let another person exist as more than an object in our story. Her concept of “decreation” radicalises this loosening of ego.

Why this matters for Humanity Through Grace

Weil gives us a bridge between contemplation and ethics. Prayer that does not improve our capacity to perceive another person may simply be another form of self-absorption.

Where we push back

Her language of affliction, obedience and self-emptying can sound dangerous when removed from context. People who have been dominated do not necessarily need to become smaller. Sometimes moral clarity requires recovering agency, boundaries and anger.

The safeguard

Self-emptying is not another person emptying you. Renunciation chosen freely before God is categorically different from coercion imposed by a leader, partner or institution.

The open question

Can contemplation diminish ego while strengthening the dignity and agency needed to resist domination?
